Florida Power and Light Re-Powers Sanford Facility

Florida Power and Light has recently awarded CCI a $3.8-million (U.S.)order for turbine bypass valves and vent systems, for a total of 68 severe-service control valves and resistors for the “re-powering” oft he Sanford facility. CCI will supply the multi-stage DRAG® SteamJet™, and multi-stage vent resistors, among others, as part of the package.

Re-powering the Sanford plant will mean replacing the two circa-1970s oil-fired generating units, with state-of-the-art combined-cycle units that substitute clean natural gas for oil – a technology much more efficient than traditional methods. CCI’s DRAG® turbine bypass protects the turbine to increase its life span and enhance overall system performance. Re-powering by this method will double the site’s electrical output, thus enabling FPL to eventually serve more than 486,000 homes and businesses, compared to the approximately 220,000occupancies it services today.

The re-powered Sanford units will begin generating electricity in 2002 and are expected to be fully operational by January 2003. CCI was also awarded the order to provide the turbine bypass valves and vent systems for FPL’s Fort Myers combined cycle re-powering project, which is scheduled for mid-2002 completion.
